How We Support Our Troops

Since its inception in 2004, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has provided millions of dollars in direct financial relief and support services to thousands of disabled American veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We are helping these brave men and women and their families rebuild their lives in many ways. For some, it’s paying bills because the financial strains of the adjustment are so overwhelming. For others, it's an online course so they can continue their education. And for some it’s as simple as getting out and going to a concert to break to monotony of rehabilitation. There are many programs targeted to the specific needs of returning heroes:

Emergency Financial Relief - Direct financial aid to disabled American veterans and their families in crisis. The Coalition provides assistance to all veterans who apply and meet the qualification criteria (stated on our application form available on line or by mail).

Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute - An educational and motivational event for wounded heroes and their families to assist in their assimilation back to civilian life. This 4-day, all-expense event has helped thousands of wounded veterans and their family members to rebuild their lives since its inception in 2004.

Holiday Gift Checks - The Coalition has provided thousands of $60 gift checks to wounded veterans and their families just prior to major holidays such as Easter and Thanksgiving so they can enjoy a traditional holiday meal together. In addition, the Coalition has provided $500 'Secret Santa' gift checks to thousands of wounded veterans and their families so they could participate in the traditional gift-giving of the Holiday season and meet other pressing financial obligations.

Partner Appreciation Program - Part-time, flexible employment at home for wounded veterans (or their spouses/primary caregivers) who call Coalition donors to thank them for their support, now in its 7th year. Approximately 25 veterans/spouses/caregivers are in the PAP program at any one time.

Education and Training - On-line programs such as the opportunity to take at no cost up to 1,500 online courses offered through the Coalition's partner, SkillSoft.

On-Base Activities - Holiday parties for wounded veterans and their families at base hospitals. "Welcome Back" celebrations for troops returning home from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Special On-Base Support Programs - Responding to requests for special support, such as providing furniture for the Army's Family Assistance Centers, with the first "test" site at Fort Campbell, Kentucky begun in 2011 and completed in 2012.

Special Events to Meet Needs of Wounded Veterans - Trips to sports events, hunting and fishing trips, and other activities providing needed recreation and enhancing social interaction with peers who are overcoming their injuries.

Public Outreach - Televised Public Service Announcements (PSA's) featuring a range of celebrities to communicate the needs of wounded veterans and encourage public support. In 2011, the Coalition PSA's reached over 65 million households and produced $3,400,000 of measured television advertising, helping generate increased awareness of veterans needs and the Coalition programs.

Public Interaction - The Coalition communicates with millions of Americans about the needs of our veterans and how they can help through its direct mail program. For example, the Coalition has distributed hundreds of thousands of Thank You and Get Well cards signed by its donors and friends to veterans in VA and DOD hospitals to encourage them by letting them know that their fellow citizens appreciate their service and the sacrifices they have made - and continue to  make - for us. We also encourage the public to communicate their support to the Congress for more adequate financial assistance and compassionate treatment for wounded veterans.

Program Grants - Program grants to other nonprofit organizations working with wounded veterans and their families in a variety of ways, including PTSD/TBI identification and treatment.

TBI/PTSD Identification and Treatment Development - The Coalition has also sought to address the problems many of our veterans are dealing with caused by TBI and PTSD, from determining how to identify veterans suffering from these conditions who remain undiagnosed and untreated, to exploring treatments for these "invisible wounds of war" which may afflict hundreds of thousands of veterans.

Field Support to Veterans - CSAH field representatives, located around the country, support the CSAH mission through frequent contact with local VA and DOD medical facilities, veterans organizations, and the population at large.
